Restoration of power and assistance for victims becomes priority in aftermath of Hurricane Milton’s impact on Florida

Recovery efforts in Florida following Hurricane Milton are focused on restoring power, clearing debris, and distributing fuel to residents impacted by the storm. As of now, over 1.5 million people are without power, and at least 17 fatalities have been confirmed. Gov. Ron DeSantis is leading efforts to assist residents and provide resources to hard-hit areas, with a particular focus on addressing the need for fuel in heavily impacted regions. Major highways and bridges have reopened, and airports are back to normal operations, with the exception of Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, which is expected to reopen soon.

Despite not experiencing the forecasted storm surge, the Tampa Bay area has seen significant damage from strong winds and heavy rainfall, leading to severe urban and inland flooding. River levels continue to rise, increasing the risk of flooding in parts of the state. Major waterways like the Anclote River, Hillsborough River, and Alafia River have reached major flood stage, causing extensive inundation of structures and roads. Pasco County has experienced historical flooding, with residents urged to evacuate low-lying areas and seek higher ground.

Emergency response workers are conducting swift-water boat patrols to assist those in need and ensure the safety of residents. The Alafia River and Hillsborough River are expected to remain in a major or moderate flood stage in the coming days. Parts of central Florida, including the St. Johns River and Ocklawaha River, are also facing elevated risks of flooding due to high water levels. Recovery efforts are ongoing as Florida works to address the aftermath of Hurricane Milton and ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
