The buyer, cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, paid in crypto and plans to eat the banana as part of the artistic experience. His purchase includes a certificate of authenticity allowing him to reproduce the artwork. The value of the piece lies in the certificate, not the banana itself, with the artwork’s concept akin to an NFT. “Comedian” initially debuted at Art Basel Miami in 2019 for $120,000, sparking viral attention on social media. Three editions were created, with one donated to the Guggenheim Collection and the other two purchased. Sun sees the artwork as a cultural phenomenon that connects art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community. Despite the high price tag, the artwork has sparked thought and discussion, becoming a part of history and a unique investment for Sun.
