Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he will be meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week. During a town hall event in Flint, Michigan, Trump praised Modi as a “fantastic” leader but also criticized India as a “very big abuser” in terms of trade policies with the U.S. Trump did not provide further details about the meeting, and the Indian Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.
Trump visited India in 2020 with the goal of strengthening trade ties between the two countries, as the U.S. is India’s second-largest trading partner after China. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from September 21 to 23 to participate in the Quad Leaders’ Summit hosted by President Joe Biden in Delaware and to address the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This visit will be Modi’s first trip to the U.S. since winning a third term in office. During his last visit in 2023, the U.S. and India signed various technology and defense deals, signaling improved bilateral relations. Recently, the U.S. Department of State announced a partnership with India’s semiconductor industry to enhance the global semiconductor supply chain, highlighting the growing cooperation between the two countries. The collaboration aims to benefit both nations by expanding India’s semiconductor industry and supporting the global digital transformation.
