Preparations are underway for a weeklong celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., with events planned throughout the city of Jackson, Mississippi. Beginning on King’s birthday, January 15th, the celebration will include an honorary program at City Hall, an awards banquet at Jackson State University, a youth talent show at Lanier High School, and an MLK parade starting at Freedom Corner. The festivities will also include a church service on Sunday and a birthday bash at City Hall on Monday. Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes is excited for the celebration, emphasizing the importance of honoring Dr. King’s legacy and inspiring unity, love, and peace. TV and radio personality Tambra Sherie also encourages everyone to attend and remember the dream that Dr. King fought for. These events are open to the public and aim to bring the community together in celebration of Dr. King’s legacy and the ongoing civil rights movement. It is expected to be the largest celebration not just in Mississippi but in the United States, showcasing the significance of Dr. King’s impact on society.
