The Biden administration to revoke Cuba’s status as a state sponsor of terrorism

Cuba announced it will release 553 political prisoners following the Biden administration’s decision to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism and take other “goodwill” actions. The prisoners were mostly detained after protests in July 2021, with some facing long prison sentences. President Miguel Díaz-Canel thanked the U.S. for the decision, which had come after negotiations with the Catholic Church. Republican lawmakers, including Cuban-American members of Congress from Florida, criticized Biden’s actions, while Senator Ted Cruz called the decision “unacceptable.” In Cuba, residents welcomed the news, believing it would bring more resources and opportunities for the country. In addition to removing Cuba from the list, the Biden administration will issue a waiver for Title III of the Helms Burton Act, which allows Cuban property owners to sue foreign companies. The administration is also easing economic pressure on Cuba by rescinding a memorandum from 2017. The move is seen as a step towards achieving practical results in promoting human rights in Cuba. Speculation over Trump’s foreign policy and the influence of figures like Sen. Marco Rubio and special envoy for Latin America Mauricio Claver-Carone has also been discussed. It should be noted that the political prisoners have not yet been released as of now.
