Athletes respond to Mississippi College’s decision to discontinue football program | Sports

Mississippi College announced on Monday that they were cutting their football program, leaving players like Brewer Bailey and Kaden Cupp shocked and emotional. The players were not given a reason for the decision by the Board of Trustees and the college president. The college stated that cutting the football program would allow them to focus on excellence in their remaining 17 sports and facility upgrades. The players were informed that their football scholarships would only be honored through the next spring, leading many to plan on transferring to other schools. Both Bailey and Cupp praised their coaches for helping them find new places to play and offering support during this difficult time. Head coach Mike Kershaw, in his first year at the program, delivered the news to the team, leaving players like Bailey, a true freshman, and Cupp, a junior transfer from Troy University, feeling blindsided by the sudden decision. Many players have already started the process of transferring, indicating that the team is dispersing as a result of the unfortunate cut.
