Film mogul Harvey Weinstein has undergone emergency heart surgery after being rushed to a hospital from Rikers Island prison in New York. The 72-year-old, who was transferred to Bellevue Hospital, had fluid removed from his heart and lungs. Weinstein’s representatives cited his ongoing health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and previous hospitalizations for COVID and pneumonia. This comes as Weinstein awaits a new trial after his 2020 rape and sexual assault convictions were overturned in New York due to an unfair trial. Jury selection for the new trial has been tentatively set for November. Weinstein is also serving a 16-year prison sentence in a separate sex crimes case in Los Angeles, with his lawyers seeking a retrial following the overturning of his New York convictions. The accusations against Weinstein, detailed by The New York Times and The New Yorker in 2017, were the catalyst for the #MeToo movement. Weinstein denies engaging in any non-consensual sexual activity and has been accused by over 80 women.
