Susan Toler Carr and her husband Darrell had to witness for themselves the devastation caused by the fires that destroyed their home in Altadena. Their house, which held many memories of their son Justin who passed away in 2013, was mostly gone. Items such as Justin’s original artwork and family heirlooms were lost in the fire. The Carrs felt a renewed sense of grief over losing their son and their home, which was a place filled with memories of Justin.
Despite the loss, the Carrs found solace in the fact that a gate built by one of Darrell’s students with the words “Justin Carr Wants World Peace” remained standing. They also found a turquoise butterfly ornament among the rubble, symbolizing hope and resilience. Darrell tried to save their home by climbing on the roof with a hose in an attempt to fend off the fire, but ultimately their efforts were in vain.
As they try to rebuild their lives and look towards the future, the Carrs are focused on staying positive and moving forward. They are grateful to be alive and have a support system of friends of all races to lean on. They are determined to persevere, knowing that as Black people, they have the strength to overcome adversity. Despite the challenges they face, they are grateful for the support they have and the opportunity to start anew.
