Possible salmonella contamination prompts recall of cucumbers in 26 states

An Arizona produce company, SunFed, is recalling all sizes of its whole, fresh American cucumbers in 26 states and parts of Canada due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall affects cucumbers sold from Oct. 12 to Nov. 26 and distributed in bulk cardboard containers labeled with the SunFed brand, as well as in generic white boxes or black plastic crates with grower stickers. The affected cucumbers were also sold in parts of Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. SunFed is working with authorities to investigate the cause of the contamination.

Consumers are advised to check if their cucumbers match the recalled products and to avoid consuming or distributing any suspicious produce. SunFed urges customers to throw out any recalled cucumbers. This recall comes after a previous recall earlier in the year in South Florida, where at least 551 people were likely sickened by salmonella, with many of the cucumbers linked to Bedner Growers Inc. and Thomas Produce Co. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the United States each year. SunFed President Craig Slate emphasized that consumer safety is a top priority and that they are working diligently to address the issue.
