Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba denies involvement in bribery scandal investigation
Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba has denied any involvement in a bribery scandal investigation currently underway in Mississippi’s capital city. Lumumba stated during a press briefing that he did not conspire with anyone to commit a crime, in response to questions about his potential role in a scheme to funnel money from FBI agents posing as real estate developers to influence city officials.
The scandal came to light after local insurance specialist Sherik Marve Smith pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery, involving unidentified co-conspirators A, B, and C. Former Ward 2 Councilwoman Angelique Lee also admitted to accepting bribes in connection with the case.
Court records show that payments were funneled to city officials in exchange for votes on a real estate development project and to influence city employees. However, Mayor Lumumba maintains that he has never conspired with Smith or anyone else to commit a crime.
Questions have been raised about Lumumba’s potential connections to the scandal, including a reported $10,000 campaign contribution linked to the bribes. The mayor has not filed an updated campaign finance report since 2022 and has urged all inquiries regarding the investigation to be directed to the proper authorities.
