Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez Advance in NCAA Individual Championships
WACO, Texas – The top-ranked doubles team from Mississippi State showcased their resilience in a thrilling match on Wednesday evening at the NCAA Individual Championships, successfully advancing to the Round of 16. Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez faced a tough challenge against the 13th-ranked California duo, Alex Chang and Michael Wright. After dropping the first set 4-6, the Bulldogs regrouped, claiming the second set decisively at 6-2. The match culminated in a tense super tiebreaker, where Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez triumphed 1-0, marking their third ranked victory of the fall season and their 15th overall as a team.
Next, the pair will take on a formidable opponent in a top-5 showdown against fourth-ranked Filippos Astreinidis and Paul Inchauspe from Princeton. The match is set for Thursday, with the exact time to be determined. The stakes are high as the winners will secure All-American status.
In a separate match on Wednesday afternoon, fellow Bulldogs Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano also aimed to advance. Unfortunately, they fell short against Indiana’s 52nd-ranked team, Jip van Assendelft and Facundo Yunis. After losing the first set 1-6, Baroni and Martinez Serrano bounced back to win the second set 6-4, but ultimately lost in a hard-fought super tiebreaker 0-1, ending their fall competition.
