Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, acknowledged his plot in a note discovered by police. The note, found in a package he gave to a witness, stated, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you.” Prosecutors also found geolocation data tying two of his cellphones to areas around Trump’s properties, as well as a list of dates when the ex-president would be in specific locations.
Routh’s cellphones were repeatedly tracked to areas near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and golf course in Florida in the weeks leading up to the alleged assassination attempt. A rifle matching the description of the one found in Routh’s possession was discovered in the bushes outside the golf course, with a fingerprint matching Routh’s found on it. In addition, Routh had a notebook filled with information on Ukraine and criticism of China and Russia.
Prosecutors also revealed that Routh dropped off a box containing ammunition, a metal pipe, and other materials at a witness’s house months before his arrest. In a letter addressed to “The World,” Routh offered $150,000 to anyone who could complete the job of assassinating Trump. He also criticized Trump’s foreign policy decisions, stating, “He ended relations with Iran like a child and now the Middle East has unraveled.”
This revelation comes amidst new polling data showing Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris in Sun belt battleground states. Harris is facing deficits in Arizona and Georgia, with North Carolina also leaning towards Trump. The presidential race remains in toss-up territory, with Harris needing to secure support in these states as well as the Great Lakes region to win the White House.
