Vice President-elect JD Vance has announced his resignation from his Senate seat in Ohio, effective at midnight Thursday. This clears the way for his swearing-in alongside President-elect Donald Trump on Jan. 20. Vance, who has served in the Senate for two years, expressed his gratitude to the people of Ohio in a statement, promising to continue putting America first both at home and abroad. At 40, Vance will be the third-youngest vice president in history.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will choose Vance’s successor, who will serve until a 2026 special election to fill the remaining two years of Vance’s term. DeWine has met with potential candidates, with his lieutenant governor, Jon Husted, emerging as a leading candidate. Other Republicans on the shortlist include former Ohio GOP chair Jane Timken, state Rep. Jay Edwards, and state Treasurer Robert Sprague. Trump has not made commitments to Husted, who is also considering running for governor after DeWine’s term ends. DeWine plans to make an announcement about Vance’s replacement next week.
Husted, when asked about the possibility of an appointment, stated that he is considering all options. DeWine declined to share details of his conversations with Husted, but confirmed that an announcement will be made soon.
