Frontgrade Gaisler Takes Charge of European Effort to Develop Ultra Deep Sub-Micron Semiconductor Technology for Space Use

Frontgrade Gaisler Signs Contract with ESA to Develop Advanced Semiconductor Technologies for Space

Gothenburg, Sweden, December 16, 2024 – Frontgrade Gaisler, in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), is leading a groundbreaking initiative to enhance European sovereignty in advanced semiconductor technologies for space applications. This project, supported by the “EEE Space Component Sovereignty for Europe” program, aims to develop cutting-edge technology for integrated circuits for space, utilizing Ultra Deep Sub-Micron nodes as advanced as 7nm.

By collaborating with industry leaders such as imec and IMST GmbH, Frontgrade Gaisler is working to create radiation-hardened libraries and Intellectual Property (IP) cores that will form the basis for UDSM-based integrated circuits. The ultimate goal is to produce a high-performance RISC-V microprocessor prototype that will enable Europe to have autonomous and competitive space computing capabilities for future satellite missions and deep-space exploration.

ESA’s Technical Officer, Boris Glass, expressed pride in supporting this initiative, emphasizing the importance of investing in UDSM processes to ensure Europe’s leadership in space innovation and autonomy. Frontgrade Gaisler’s General Manager, Sandi Habinc, highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing UDSM technology and strengthening its position in the space industry.

With decades of experience in supplying advanced semiconductor products to the space sector, Frontgrade Gaisler is well-equipped to lead the efforts towards next-generation space-grade microprocessor technology. This collaboration aims to not only meet the growing demands of the space sector but also to pave the way for new types of space missions and long-term industry growth.
