Mo Williams to Be Inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame
Jackson, MS – Mo Williams, the head men’s basketball coach at Jackson State University and a celebrated former NBA Champion, will be honored with induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025. A native of Jackson, Williams’s journey reflects a remarkable trajectory of talent and dedication to the sport.
Williams first showcased his skills at Murrah High School, later shining at the University of Alabama. His successful 13-year NBA career culminated in 2016 when he played a pivotal role in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ historic championship victory alongside superstar LeBron James.
Currently, Williams is channeling his passion for basketball back into the community through his role at Jackson State. In his second season, he guided the Tigers to a 15-17 overall record and a commendable 10-8 finish in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play. Despite not clinching a championship, the team demonstrated resilience and secured a top-five seed for the SWAC Tournament, a testament to Williams’s effective leadership and commitment to building a strong program.
The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced his induction in June 2025, which will coincide with a celebration honoring other local sports legends, including Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry and football icons such as Dexter McCluster and Mike Justice.
Scheduled for August 1-2, 2025, the induction weekend promises to be a memorable tribute to Mississippi’s rich sports heritage. For Mo Williams, this honor marks a full-circle moment in his career, illustrating the impact of hard work, perseverance, and community involvement in sports. As he continues to mentor the next generation at Jackson State, his legacy only grows stronger.
