Sam Purcell Receives Contract Extension as Head Coach of Mississippi State Women’s Basketball

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State women’s basketball head coach Sam Purcell has signed a contract extension through the 2028-29 season, following a successful run that includes two NCAA Tournament appearances in just three years. The announcement was made on Thursday, highlighting Purcell’s commitment to the program and its future.

“I would like to thank Dr. Mark Keenum and Director of Athletics Zac Selmon for their trust to build on the success we have had. I’m extremely excited to work with Zac as he continues to elevate our athletic department,” Purcell expressed. He credited his staff and the student-athletes for their dedication and pride, emphasizing his excitement to continue in Starkville.

Under Purcell’s leadership, the Bulldogs have recorded an impressive 67 wins, including 24 in conference play—the most by any coach in their first three seasons. Purcell has not only achieved three consecutive 20-win seasons but has also led the team to its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance, netting three victories in the tournament during his tenure.

A significant factor in Purcell’s success is his ability to develop talent, notably Jerkaila Jordan, who ranks prominently in the Mississippi State record books, highlighted by her impressive stats in points and steals. Both Jordan and Jessika Carter earned All-SEC Second Team honors under his guidance, with Carter recently being drafted into the WNBA—an achievement marking a milestone for the program.

Recognized as a leading recruiter, Purcell has successfully attracted seven ESPNW top-100 signees, including a highly touted 11th-ranked class for 2024. With season tickets for the 2025-26 season now on sale, fans are encouraged to secure their seats as excitement builds for the program’s future.
