Chicago Aims to Hold on to James Beard Awards Beyond 2027
Chicago, IL – June 16, 2025 – At the star-studded red carpet event for the 2025 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards outside the Lyric Opera, Kristen Reynolds, the fresh president and CEO of Choose Chicago, made a bold statement: Chicago intends to keep the prestigious James Beard Awards far beyond 2027. "We are definitely keeping the James Beard Awards in Chicago," Reynolds proclaimed, highlighting the city’s culinary prominence and cultural relevance, particularly in the wake of popular shows like "The Bear."
This year’s ceremony marks the 35th anniversary of the awards, which have been held in Chicago since 2015. Although the awards are confirmed in the city until 2027, the future location remains uncertain. Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed Reynolds’ sentiments, promising to prioritize retaining the awards in Chicago. "It’s fitting that this award show remains here, in a city shaped by a rich tapestry of immigrant stories," he affirmed, reflecting the diverse culinary influences that characterize Chicago dining.
Co-host Andrew Zimmern emphasized Chicago’s vibrant culinary scene and the broader social responsibilities of chefs. He noted that award recipients often bring hope and change to their communities, touching on social issues ranging from immigration to climate challenges. "The magic of these awards is that they change lives," Zimmern stated.
Among the nominees, Thai Dang of HaiSous expressed joy in being recognized as a finalist for Best Chef: Great Lakes. "To finally make it to this stage feels incredible," he said. With pride among the nominees palpable, the red carpet served as a celebration of Chicago’s culinary excellence and resilience, setting the stage for a hopeful future.
