Director Robert Saarnio Steps Down After 13 Transformative Years at the University of Mississippi Museum
June 16, 2025 – Oxford, MS — After more than a decade at the helm of the University of Mississippi Museum, Director Robert Saarnio has announced his retirement, leaving behind a legacy marked by increased accessibility, growth, and national acclaim.
Saarnio, who joined the museum in 2012 after a successful stint at the Honolulu Museum of Art, quickly embraced Oxford’s charm and Southern hospitality. “The warmth of my welcome just completely powered past any culture shock,” he reflected.
Under his leadership, the museum underwent significant changes, including the elimination of admission fees, which removed financial barriers and allowed broader community access. “You can come to this museum, park for free, and stay for as long as you like,” Saarnio stated, reinforcing his commitment to inclusion.
Saarnio was instrumental in digitizing the museum’s antiquities collection, making it accessible worldwide. He celebrated the museum’s recognition in national rankings, attributing successes to the dedicated staff and university support, as well as the growth of the museum’s full-time employees from five to eight.
Significantly, in 2019, the museum permanently acquired the entire contents of Rowan Oak, William Faulkner’s historic home, securing a vital piece of literary heritage. He also highlighted the museum’s publishing accomplishments, such as two notable volumes edited by the late Dr. Anne Abadie.
Even after his retirement on June 30, Saarnio plans to remain active in the community. “It never occurred to me to leave Oxford,” he said, expressing his commitment to volunteering and serving on a national academic museum board.
As the search for his successor concludes, Saarnio remains confident in the museum’s bright future.
