Press Release
Bo Robinson, Former Mississippi Public Service Commissioner, Passes at 90
STARKVILLE, MS — Dorlos “Bo” Robinson, a notable figure in Mississippi politics and public service, passed away peacefully on May 26 at his home in Hamilton at the age of 90. Appointed in 1989 by then-Governor Ray Mabus to the Mississippi Public Service Commission (PSC) after a tumultuous period of corruption, Robinson became a stabilizing force during challenging times for the state’s utility regulation.
Robinson succeeded D.W. Snyder, who was convicted on federal charges, and joined a PSC marked by the resignation of Southern District Commissioner Lynn Havens, who faced similar legal issues. His appointment raised questions about the integrity of elected officials who could accept campaign contributions from the utilities they regulated. However, Robinson’s extensive background—spanning law enforcement, farming, and business—ensured he brought a practical approach to his role.
Born in 1935 on his family’s farm, Robinson’s early life included service as a military policeman in the U.S. Air Force and years in the Mississippi National Guard. He was elected as Monroe County Sheriff from 1968 to 1972, later serving in the Mississippi House from 1980 until his PSC appointment in 1990. He notably remained a PSC member until 2007, earning respect from colleagues and constituents alike.
Robinson’s legacy involves his commitment to meaningful public service, notably supporting vital education reforms during Governor William Winter’s administration. His passing leaves behind a legacy of community dedication, as demonstrated by tributes from political figures at a retirement surprise event.
Sid Salter, a syndicated columnist, remembers Robinson as a widely respected leader whose contributions will be missed.
