Tampa Bay Rays Welcome Jake Mangum’s MLB Debut
TAMPA, FL — Jake Mangum, the former Mississippi State baseball standout and two-time All-American, made a significant entrance into Major League Baseball on Sunday, debuting for the Tampa Bay Rays in their 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
The 29-year-old Pearl native, previously called up from the minor leagues, took his place in right field and batted second in the lineup. Although Mangum did not record a hit—going 0-for-3 with a walk—his first at-bat showcased promise as he nearly connected with a flyout to the warning track in left field.
His debut marked a milestone as he became the 71st former Mississippi State player to grace the MLB. Attendance at the game was bolstered by the presence of his longtime friend, NFL quarterback Gardner Minshew, who came to support Mangum on this memorable occasion.
During his collegiate career from 2016 to 2019, Mangum left an indelible mark on the Bulldogs, helping lead the team to four NCAA tournament Super Regionals and two College World Series. With an impressive career batting average of .357, he also holds the title for the SEC all-time hits leader.
Despite being drafted three times, with the New York Mets selecting him in the fourth round in 2019, Mangum’s professional journey saw him traded to the Miami Marlins in 2022 before ultimately joining the Rays earlier this year.
