Governor Unveils Statewide AI Initiative

Press Release: Mississippi Launches AI Talent Accelerator Program

JACKSON, Miss. — Governor Tate Reeves announced a groundbreaking initiative on Thursday aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning capabilities across Mississippi’s higher education institutions. The newly established Mississippi AI Talent Accelerator Program is designed to support the expansion of Amazon Web Services (AWS) while fostering a robust training infrastructure for the state’s technology and information sectors.

"This is another bold step forward for Mississippi," said Reeves. "We’re not just preparing for the future — we’re building it. This investment will ensure that Mississippians are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy."

To kick off this initiative, Reeves has approved $9.1 million in funding grants to several universities. Allocations include $1.15 million for Alcorn State University, $1.3 million for Jackson State University, $1 million for Millsaps College, $2.2 million for the University of Mississippi, and $1.08 million for Tougaloo University. These grants, approved by the legislature, will enable the institutions to develop or enhance existing AI and technology programs.

In addition to the grant recipients, other universities such as Ole Miss and Hinds Community College will also engage in the initiative through additional funding avenues. The program will be executed in partnership with Accelerate MS, the Mississippi Development Authority, and AWS.

A newly formed AI Workforce Readiness Council will facilitate collaboration among stakeholders, ensuring that Mississippi’s workforce is prepared to meet the demands of a digital economy. Through these efforts, the state aims to position itself as a leader in technology education and workforce development.
