Mississippians and Advocates Weigh In on Los Angeles Protests

Mississippi Residents Respond to Immigration Protests Amid Federal Crackdown

Jackson, MS — As immigration protests enter their fifth day in Los Angeles, residents of Mississippi are closely observing the developments and expressing diverse views on the government’s actions toward immigrants.

Local sentiments are polarized. Don Gentry firmly believes that those residing in the country illegally are criminals who should be removed, likening their disregard for immigration laws to receiving a ticket for speeding. In contrast, Brian Trip argues that many immigrants seek a better life and deserve a path to citizenship rather than being labeled as criminals.

The environment of fear surrounding deportation sweeps is palpable, according to L. Patricia Ice of the Mississippi Immigrants Rights Alliance (MIRA). "Many of my clients are very nervous when they see border patrol cars and realize people are being picked up," Ice stated. She emphasized the challenges facing immigration lawyers, noting that while laws haven’t fundamentally changed, their interpretation and enforcement have become increasingly unpredictable under the current administration.

MIRA advises immigrants to exercise caution, specifically advising against opening doors to ICE agents or Homeland Security officials without warrants, while still attending scheduled immigration appointments.

In response to the escalating tensions, a series of peaceful protests called "No Kings Day" are set to take place across Mississippi this Saturday. This initiative aligns with a nationwide movement aimed at opposing the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Organizers state the protests are essential for Americans to unite against what they describe as "cruelty, corruption, and authoritarianism."

Protests are scheduled in various cities including Jackson, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, Oxford, Gulfport, Hernando, and Starkville, with different times and locations for each gathering. Activists are urging community members to join in a show of solidarity.
