Bison Charges Man in Yellowstone After Tourists Approach Too Closely

In Yellowstone National Park, a 30-year-old man from Randolph, New Jersey, was gored by a bison on Tuesday morning after getting too close to the animal in the Old Faithful area. He sustained minor injuries and received treatment, but further details about his condition and identity have not been released, pending the investigation. This incident marks the second goring by a bison in the park this spring; the first was on May 7, involving a 47-year-old man from Cape Coral, Florida, who also suffered minor injuries.

Historically, bison have been responsible for more injuries to humans in Yellowstone than any other wild animal. Last year, an 83-year-old woman from South Carolina was seriously hurt, and another goring incident involved an Arizona woman in 2023. In 2022, two people were injured by bison in the park.

Bison, known as North America’s largest land animals, can reach speeds of up to 35 mph and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. Given their size and speed, they represent a significant danger to park visitors who do not adhere to safety regulations. These regulations mandate that visitors maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from bison and other large herbivores, and 100 yards from wolves and bears. The need for awareness and compliance with these guidelines is emphasized, particularly as bison continue to pose risks in the popular tourist destination.
