Iowa-Wisconsin Bridge Remains Closed Through Memorial Day Weekend Due to Safety Concerns
LANSING, IA – The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced that the Iowa 9/Wisconsin 82 Mississippi River bridge, connecting Lansing, Iowa, with Crawford County, Wisconsin, will remain closed through the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend. This decision follows significant safety concerns after sensors on May 17 detected excessive movement in the structure.
After an immediate shutdown, engineering teams conducted follow-up surveys that confirmed ongoing movement. Currently, inspections are ongoing to assess the bridge’s safety and determine necessary repairs. At this moment, no timeline has been established for a potential reopening.
Officials from both the Iowa DOT and Wisconsin DOT have advised motorists to seek alternative routes. Suggested crossing points include the nearest bridges located in La Crescent, Minnesota/Lacrosse, Wisconsin, and Marquette, Iowa/Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. While the bridge remains closed to vehicular traffic, the river channel below remains open for navigation.
In related news, construction on a new Mississippi River bridge located just south of the existing structure is progressing. This development is part of efforts to improve regional infrastructure.
