Tigers Suffer Setback in Series Opener Against Mississippi State

COLUMBIA, MO. – After a promising sweep of Texas A&M for its first Southeastern Conference wins of the season, Mizzou baseball faced a harsh reality, falling 25-7 to Mississippi State in the opener at Taylor Stadium on Thursday. The Tigers (16-36, 3-25 SEC) struggled defensively, allowing an SEC record-tying eight home runs while surrendering 23 hits and five walks throughout the game.

The Bulldogs (32-20, 13-15 SEC) capitalized on early opportunities, scoring three runs in the first inning and adding four more in the fourth to establish an 8-0 lead. Mizzou’s head coach, Kerrick Jackson, lamented the team’s inability to “get zeros” against such a potent offense, which proved challenging for the Tigers.

Highlighting the Bulldogs’ offensive prowess, sophomore Ace Reese and senior Reed Stallman, who entered the game as a defensive substitution, each recorded two home runs and combined for seven RBIs. Senior pitcher Pico Kohn kept Mizzou’s offense at bay, striking out seven hitters and limiting the Tigers to just two hits through 4⅓ innings.

Mizzou managed to push back with four runs in the sixth inning, sparked by junior Keegan Knutson’s RBI single and a three-run homer from Jackson Lovich, narrowing the score to 12-4. However, Mississippi State quickly responded, extending their lead with three runs in the eighth and an explosive ten-run ninth inning that buried the Tigers.

Coach Jackson reflected on the team’s inconsistency, noting the team’s struggles with maturity and hoping for more stability after the previous weekend’s success. The Tigers prepare for the second game of the series against Mississippi State, scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Taylor Stadium.
