University of Mississippi Memorial Ceremony to Honor Lost Members of the Community
University, MS – The University of Mississippi will hold its annual Memorial Ceremony to honor students, faculty, staff, and emeriti who passed away during the 2024-25 academic year. The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 4 PM at Paris Yates Chapel, fostering a reflective atmosphere for healing and remembrance.
Chancellor Glenn Boyce expressed the university’s sorrow for the loss of community members, stating, “By gathering during the University Memorial Ceremony, our hope is that we will have a reflective time to honor those that we lost, while expressing care and compassion through our shared remembrance, thoughts, and prayers.”
Members of the Lafayette-Oxford-University community are invited to attend and participate in this solemn occasion. Those needing assistance due to a disability can reach out via email at events@olemiss.edu.
The ceremony will feature speakers including ASB President Jack Jones, Staff Council President Lolita Gregory, and Faculty Senate Chair Hans Sinha, who will read the names of the deceased. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the University Student String Quartet, enhancing the emotional resonance of the event.
This year’s ceremony will honor the following individuals:
Students: Bemnet Gochel, Jesse Rego, Gianna Solimine, Wyatt Thistle, Jamiah Thomas, and Luke Whaley.
Faculty: Ann Abadie and Ira Richard Gershon.
Staff: Michael Bruner, Jimmy McCoy Jr., Deborah Smith, and Joanette Shelly Stoddard.
The Memorial Ceremony aims to provide a space for reflection and support as the university community comes together to remember those who have impacted their lives.
