Former Governor Jim Guy Tucker of Arkansas Passes at 81

Little Rock, AR — Jim Guy Tucker, the 43rd governor of Arkansas, passed away on February 13 at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness. A prominent figure in Arkansas politics from the 1970s through the 1990s, Tucker held several key positions, including lieutenant governor, attorney general, U.S. congressman, and prosecuting attorney.

Born on June 13, 1943, in Oklahoma City and raised in Little Rock, Tucker graduated from Harvard with a degree in government before serving in the Marine Corps. He later worked as a civilian war correspondent in Vietnam, experiences that inspired his book, "Arkansas Men at War."

Tucker’s political career took off when he was elected lieutenant governor in 1990 and ascended to governorship in 1992 following Bill Clinton’s election to the presidency. During his term, he tackled significant issues, such as Medicaid funding crises, and implemented reforms in criminal justice and economic development. However, his administration was marred by the Whitewater scandal, leading to his resignation in 1996.

In addition to his political achievements, Tucker found success in business, notably in real estate development and cable television operations. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children.

Tributes poured in from current and former governors, including Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and President Bill Clinton, who praised Tucker’s dedication to public service and noted his impact on Arkansas. Clinton reflected on their longstanding friendship and Tucker’s efforts to support his early political career.

As friends, family, and colleagues remember Tucker, his legacy of service and commitment to Arkansas affirms the significant mark he made on the state’s history.
