Press Release: Mississippi Aquarium Releases Endangered Turtles into the Wild

BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – In a heartwarming event on Monday afternoon, the Mississippi Aquarium joyfully released ten critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles into the Mississippi Sound. These remarkable turtles were rescued last winter after suffering from cold-stun injuries, pneumonia, bone infections, and frostbite.

The rehabilitation effort at the aquarium, which included medical treatment and care, aimed to restore the turtles to health before their return to the wild. "It is not a privilege that we take lightly," said Alexa Delaune, Vice President of Veterinary Services at Mississippi Aquarium. "They are very endangered and very charismatic. A lot of people love sea turtles and may never get to see one in real life, but we have the privilege of taking care of them every day.”

The release was made even more special as it proudly bore a theme inspired by pop icon Taylor Swift, with each turtle named after one of her beloved songs. This creative approach not only highlighted the turtles’ individuality but also aimed to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation.

The event serves as a reminder of the aquarium’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the urgent need to protect vulnerable species. "We love them, love the ocean, and want to be the best stewards of the Earth,” Delaune emphasized.

With this successful release, the Mississippi Aquarium continues to reinforce its role in wildlife conservation, inspiring hope for the future of the Kemp’s ridley turtles and other endangered marine life.
