Conservation group designates Mississippi River as the ‘most endangered’ in the United States

The Mississippi River has been named the most endangered river in the country by the advocacy group American Rivers. The river, which provides drinking water for 20 million people and is home to over 800 species of fish and wildlife, faces threats such as increased flooding and inadequate disaster prevention. Recent cuts to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and calls to abolish the agency by President Donald Trump have added to the concerns.

While flooding has not been an issue in the Minnesota stretch of the Mississippi this year, the river still faces challenges such as pollution from agriculture. Farm drainage systems lead to runoff of pollutants, sediment, and nutrients into the river, exacerbating the issue. Planting cover crops and developing sustainable fuel sources are potential solutions to prevent erosion and pollution.

Other threats include aging dams and a proposed underground nickel-copper mine in Aitkin County, which poses risks to the Mississippi River watershed. Conservationists are urging for increased efforts to protect the river and ensure its health for the millions of people who rely on it. Keeping the Mississippi River clean and safe is essential not just for the environment but also for the communities and industries that depend on it.
