Three weeks after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, basic services have yet to be restored in the worst-hit areas. A report by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted that strong aftershocks continue to shake central Myanmar almost daily, increasing fear and disrupting relief efforts. The earthquake caused significant damage to six regions and worsened an existing humanitarian crisis in the country.
The death toll from the quake has reached 3,726, with thousands injured and many still missing. Myanmar’s fire services department and international rescuers have been working to recover bodies and provide relief to survivors. The priority now is clearing debris and assisting those affected by the earthquake.
The United Nations Development Program estimated that 2.5 million tons of debris need to be removed following the quake, while UN-Habitat is assessing building damage in affected regions. In Naypyitaw, the capital, most rescuers have ceased their efforts, and damaged government buildings remain unrepaired.
Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing announced plans to redesign the urban layout of Naypyitaw, which became the capital in 2006. The city is known for its grand government buildings and wide roads. Despite the challenges faced in the aftermath of the earthquake, residents are working together to clear debris in residential areas.
