Recharge on the Road: Tennis Pros Battle Jet Lag with Strategic Globetrotting

Frances Tiafoe, a tennis player and Washington Wizards fan, is facing jet lag during the red-clay season in Europe, which coincides with the NBA Playoffs. Despite the struggle to adjust to the time difference, Tiafoe enjoys being able to watch basketball games in the early hours of the morning. He acknowledges the challenge of staying awake or falling asleep at odd hours during this time.

According to Tiafoe and fellow tennis player Belinda Bencic, the key to overcoming jet lag is to stay one step ahead by adjusting your routine to match the time zone you will be in. This means trying to sleep and eat according to the new time zone as soon as possible, even while traveling. Bencic advises shocking yourself on the first day by either staying awake or going straight to sleep to help your body adjust more quickly.

Tiafoe’s approach is to convince himself that he is not tired for a couple of days, even if he is struggling to stay awake. By mentally preparing and adapting to the new time zone as quickly as possible, athletes like Tiafoe and Bencic are able to minimize the effects of jet lag and perform at their best during competitions.
