The Mississippi River water levels are rising in St. Francisville, due to heavy rain and flooding in other parts of the Midwest. Sheriff Brian Spillman of West Feliciana noted that while high water is not uncommon, it has been a few years since they have seen levels this high. The river is projected to reach 57 and a half feet, with current levels already at 36 feet. Residents are accustomed to the rising water, as the parish does not have levee protection, leading to flooding in the floodplain whenever the river rises.
Despite the rising water, residents were still seen enjoying activities such as fishing, boating, and jet skiing. However, Spillman warned boaters to be cautious of driftwood that poses a danger to watercraft. The rising water levels are expected to impact low-lying areas, businesses, and industries along the river.
Spillman emphasized the importance of being prepared for the rising water and urged residents to be vigilant of their surroundings. The river is expected to crest in about 10 days, with levels rising five feet higher than the current stage. The community is advised to take precautions and stay informed about the situation as the Mississippi River continues to rise.
