New Operator Takes Over Mississippi Delta Operations

American Services Rail (ASR) has taken over the operations of the Mississippi Delta Railroad from Rock Island Rail, as reported by the Federal Register. The 51-mile former Illinois Central line, owned by Coahoma County, Miss., will now be operated by ASR as a common carrier.

Rock Island Rail had been managing the line since early 2019, primarily focusing on car storage. However, by early April, many of the stored cars had departed, leaving an empty yard in Clarksdale, Miss. ASR, headquartered in Southaven, Miss., will now be responsible for operating the line, which stretches between Jonestown, Miss., and a connection with CN at Swan Lake.

Rock Island Rail, based in Sumner, Miss., will be relocating its locomotives to its other operations, which include Gulf & Ship Island and Ottawa Northern. ASR, known for its expertise in track construction, maintenance, and derailment services, is ready to take on the task of operating the Mississippi Delta Railroad.

This new development marks a significant change in the management of the railroad line, with ASR stepping in to fill the shoes of Rock Island Rail. The transition is expected to bring fresh perspectives and strategies to the operations of the line, benefitting both the local community and the transportation industry as a whole.
