Arkansas takes steps to prohibit ‘unhealthy snacks’ from SNAP program

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced a plan to restrict the types of food that can be purchased with food stamps in the state. The plan seeks to ban items like soda and candy from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) while expanding eligible items to include healthier options like hot rotisserie chicken. This move is part of the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) agenda, which aims to address chronic disease and healthcare costs by reforming federal nutrition programs.

Sanders highlighted the need to address the high rates of diabetes and chronic illness in Arkansas, stating that taxpayers are currently covering the costs of junk food purchases through SNAP while also paying for the healthcare costs associated with poor nutrition. Over one-third of Arkansas residents are either diabetic or prediabetic, leading to significant healthcare expenses for the state.

The waiver request submitted by the Arkansas administration would affect nearly 350,000 SNAP recipients in the state and is scheduled to take effect in July 2026 if approved. The move has been praised by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and aligns with the Trump administration’s focus on state-driven solutions for improving public health. Critics, including some industry trade groups, have raised objections to the plan, arguing that the restrictions are punitive and unsupported by data.

Overall, the goal of the plan is to encourage healthier food choices among SNAP recipients and reduce the burden of chronic disease on both individuals and the healthcare system. The waiver request is currently in the public comment period, and officials are working towards swift implementation pending approval from the USDA.
