Ole Miss baseball senior Mason Nichols has been honored with the 2025 Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship, a prestigious academic award from the NCAA. Nichols, who was also recently awarded the Taylor Medal by the University of Mississippi, has been a standout on the field as well. He has been a consistent presence in the Rebels’ starting rotation this season, achieving a career-high 10 strikeouts in a game against Wright State.
Nichols, a Mississippi native, has been with the Rebels for all four seasons of his career and has appeared in more games than any other pitcher on the team. Graduating with a degree in biological sciences in May, Nichols has been actively involved in community service, volunteering at events for individuals with special needs, church activities for the elderly, and team projects for low-income families.
His experience in college baseball has shaped his leadership approach, resilience, and commitment to service. As he prepares for a medical career, Nichols aims to bring the same level of discipline and teamwork from the field to the healthcare field, particularly in underserved communities. He plans to improve access to care in Mississippi and mentor future medical professionals from his home state.
The Walter Byers Scholarship program, established in 1988, annually awards two $24,000 scholarships to student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics, and leadership potential.
