Monitoring equipment set to be installed in Mississippi River close to Fulton – Shaw Local

The U.S. Geological Survey, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is conducting a research project in Pool 13 of the Upper Mississippi River to monitor waves and water clarity. Monitoring equipment will be placed below the water surface from early April to mid-September, with orange buoys marking the locations. The public is asked to avoid these areas to prevent interference with the project. While hunting, fishing, and recreational activities are not restricted near monitoring sites, individuals are urged not to disturb the equipment. It is important to report any unexpected events, damaged property, or suspicious activity around the monitoring equipment. The data collected will help scientists better understand how waves impact water clarity and the ecosystem of the river, including native freshwater mussels and aquatic plants like wild celery. This information will be crucial for rehabilitation efforts in Pool 13 and other areas along the Mississippi River. Local, state, and federal officials are aware of the placement of the equipment and are asking for the public’s cooperation and support in this important research initiative.
