Trial shows new blood pressure medication effectively treats uncontrolled hypertension

Researchers at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology presented promising results from a Phase 2b clinical trial of a new medication, lorundrostat, for individuals with uncontrolled hypertension. The study showed that patients who received lorundrostat in addition to their usual hypertension medications experienced a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure compared to those who received a placebo. The drug works by blocking the production of aldosterone, a hormone that controls salt levels in the body, ultimately lowering blood pressure. The study included a diverse group of participants, with over half being Black individuals who are at higher risk for hypertension.

While the drug showed a significant reduction in blood pressure, researchers noted that patients taking lorundrostat were more likely to develop high potassium levels, a potential side effect to monitor. Although more research is needed on the long-term effects of the medication and comparisons to existing treatments, the results have been promising so far. The drug is currently in Phase 3 trials for FDA approval and could potentially be available within the next 12 to 18 months. Overall, the development of drugs like lorundrostat is seen as crucial for the 30% to 40% of individuals with uncontrolled hypertension who require alternative treatment options. The potential benefits of this new class of medications, aldosterone synthase inhibitors, in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes is significant, and further research and monitoring will be essential for widespread use.
