If you suspect you have the measles, what steps should you take?

The spread of measles across the country has health care providers concerned about the potential exposure of vulnerable patients, including newborns, to the highly contagious virus. Medical experts advise individuals with suspected cases of measles to take precautions before visiting a doctor’s office or emergency room to prevent infecting others. With over 500 measles cases reported in at least 20 states, especially in Texas where the outbreak has grown to 400 cases, it is crucial to avoid exposing individuals in hospitals and clinics, particularly those who are pregnant, immunocompromised, or in fragile health. To minimize the risk of spreading measles, patients should wear masks in health care facilities and notify staff before entering. ER staff may need to make arrangements for isolation rooms with specialized airflow and filtration systems for measles patients. Although there is no specific treatment for measles, supportive care such as fluids and fever-reducing medication can alleviate symptoms. Parents should seek medical attention if their child appears short of breath or dehydrated. With measles having a long incubation period, unvaccinated individuals can reduce their risk of infection by getting vaccinated within 72 hours of exposure. The measles vaccine is highly effective, preventing 97% of infections with two doses.
