Rescuers in Lithuania search for sunken vehicle of 4 missing U.S. Army soldiers

Rescuers in Lithuania are working to recover a submerged U.S. Army vehicle that went missing with four soldiers during a training exercise. The M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle was found more than 16 feet below ground in a peat bog. Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas expressed support for the rescue operation. Defense Minister Dovilė Šakalienė said she was saddened by the soldiers’ disappearance and efforts are being made to provide medical support. The U.S. Army, Lithuanian Armed Forces, and civilian agencies are involved in the recovery efforts. President Donald Trump was not briefed about the missing soldiers, and NATO clarified that the fate of the soldiers is still unknown. Lithuania, a NATO member since 2004, hosts American troops as part of the “Atlantic Resolve” operation in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region. The country shares a border with Belarus, led by Alexander Lukashenko, who has been called “Europe’s last dictator” and has been a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The situation remains unresolved, with hope for a positive outcome as rescue efforts continue.
