Two men have been convicted in a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by the Iranian government to silence critic Masih Alinejad in the United States. Journalist Alinejad has been vocal about Iran’s treatment of women and human rights abuses. The men, Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, were convicted of multiple charges including murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder. Alinejad responded to the verdict, stating that the regime of the Islamic Republic was being held accountable for bringing terror to U.S. soil. The men were tasked by high-ranking officials in the Revolutionary Guard to find and kill Alinejad for $500,000. The assignment came after a failed kidnapping attempt on Alinejad in 2021. The men subcontracted the job to another individual, Khalid Mehdiyev, who was arrested before the murder could be carried out. Iran has denied the allegations. Alinejad, who was banned from Iran after her coverage of political corruption, has been an advocate for women’s rights and has encouraged women to post photos without the mandatory hijab. Amirov and Omarov face the possibility of life in prison at their sentencing. President Donald Trump recently ordered Voice of America, where Alinejad was affiliated, to reduce operations to a minimum. The FBI has condemned Iran’s attempts to harm American citizens and welcomed the convictions in this case.
