X takes legal action against Modi administration for removing content in latest battle against censorship in India.

Elon Musk’s X has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government, specifically the IT Ministry, alleging that they have unlawfully expanded censorship powers to make it easier to remove online content. The lawsuit claims that this has empowered numerous government officials to execute such orders, leading to rampant censorship of information in India. The IT Ministry is accused of using a government website launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs to issue content blocking orders without the necessary legal safeguards in place. X argues that this parallel mechanism for censorship is a violation of Indian law and is seeking to quash the directive. The case was briefly heard in the High Court of southern Karnataka state, with a final decision set for March 27. This legal dispute is part of an ongoing conflict between X, formerly known as Twitter, and the Indian government over compliance with content removal orders. X complied with previous orders related to tweets about a farmers’ protest but is continuing its legal challenge in Indian courts. The lawsuit comes as Elon Musk’s other ventures, Starlink and Tesla, are nearing launch in India.
