U.S. Airman Accused of Murdering Woman Who Disappeared in South Dakota Last August

Quinterius Chappelle, an active-duty airman stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing of 21-year-old Sahela Sangrait. Sangrait’s badly decomposed body was found in March, months after she disappeared in August of the previous year. Chappelle is accused of killing Sangrait on the base, although the nature of their relationship is unclear.

Chappelle, who was arrested and is being held in the Pennington County Jail, entered the service in April 2019 and was assigned to the 28th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. Military officials are working with local law enforcement agencies in the investigation, and the U.S. attorney’s office for South Dakota will prosecute the case.

Sangrait, a Native American, was last known to be staying with a friend in Eagle Butte before she disappeared. She had told her friend she was going to her hometown of Box Elder before a planned trip to California. There is uncertainty about whether she made it to Box Elder and when she traveled there. Various law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the investigation, and anyone with information about Sangrait’s killing is encouraged to contact the FBI’s Rapid City office.
