Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi emphasized the need for sustainable lifestyle options that are accessible and affordable for all consumers while protecting basic rights and needs. Speaking at a World Consumer Rights Day webinar, Joshi highlighted the importance of sustainable lifestyles in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. He noted that consumer protection and sustainability have been integral to Indian culture and administration historically.
The government has been actively promoting sustainability through responsible consumer policies, including expanding eco-labelling programs and strengthening regulations against greenwashing. Joshi mentioned efforts to make sustainable products more affordable and accessible by encouraging industries to adopt environment-friendly manufacturing processes and innovations.
Joshi also spoke about moving towards promoting consumer interest and care beyond consumer protection and emphasized the importance of consumers understanding their shared responsibilities towards society. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mission LiFE, which aims to transition towards a circular economy focused on mindful and deliberate utilization.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare mentioned that this year’s theme of transitioning to sustainable lifestyles aligns with the cultural values and ethos of India. She stressed the importance of sustainability not becoming costly or unaffordable for consumers.
The webinar was attended by Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs B L Verma and other senior ministry officials. Overall, the focus was on promoting sustainable lifestyles that benefit both people and the planet while ensuring consumer rights and needs are protected.
