Newsmax reached a $40 million settlement with Smartmatic voting machine company

Newsmax has agreed to pay Smartmatic a total of $40 million as part of a settlement following a defamation lawsuit last year. The settlement includes a cash payment as well as the option to purchase stock in Newsmax, with $20 million already paid and the remainder to be paid before July. Newsmax stated that this settlement will eliminate future legal expenses related to the lawsuit. The lawsuit focused on false claims made by Newsmax that Smartmatic manipulated the 2020 presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. Newsmax acknowledged the court’s finding that these allegations were false. Smartmatic also settled a similar defamation lawsuit against One America News earlier this year. Smartmatic’s lawyer stated that they are now focused on a similar case against Fox News and look forward to holding them accountable. Fox Corp., the parent company of Fox News, reached a settlement in 2023 to pay $787.5 million to Dominion Voting Systems to settle defamation claims. Newsmax’s settlement with Smartmatic sheds light on the details of the confidential agreement reached last year and shows the financial consequences of spreading false information.
