Robert Morris, the founder of Gateway Church in Texas, has been indicted on five criminal counts involving a child by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office. The charges stem from alleged lewd and indecent acts with a 12-year-old girl that occurred between 1982 and 1986 when Morris was 21 years old. Morris resigned as senior pastor of the megachurch last year after admitting to inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in the 1980s. The church’s Board of Elders claimed they were not aware of the girl’s age or the length of the alleged abuse, leading to Morris’s resignation.
The indictment details multiple instances of inappropriate touching and sexual misconduct by Morris towards the victim, referred to as C.C. In a statement, C.C. expressed gratitude for authorities pursuing justice after nearly 43 years, stating that it was time for Morris to be held accountable for his crimes.
Morris, who was a member of President Donald Trump’s spiritual advisory committee, was not in custody at the time of the indictment. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. The attorney general’s office plans to work with Morris’s attorneys for him to surrender himself and face the legal process. Clemishire, the victim, had previously sought restitution from Morris to cover the cost of counseling, but negotiations fell through due to a nondisclosure agreement.
