Faulknor Receives Mississippi Humanities Teacher of the Year Award


Sonya Faulknor, Assistant Professor of Music and Assistant Choir Director at Rust College, has been named the 2025 Humanities Teacher of the Year by the Mississippi Humanities Council. Recognized for her exceptional work in public engagement with the humanities, Faulknor was awarded this prestigious honor with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

In a captivating lecture recital titled “A Musical Exploration of Social and Cultural Change,” Faulknor showcased her commitment to using music as a lens to explore societal transformation and cultural dialogue. The event, which took place before a full audience on February 28th, highlighted her innovative approach to engaging with the community through the arts.

The Mississippi Humanities Council annually honors faculty members from higher education institutions across the state who excel in bringing the humanities to life for public audiences. Faulknor is set to receive her award during the Public Humanities Awards Gala on March 28 in Jackson, Mississippi.

Originally from Montego Bay, Jamaica, Faulknor began her career as a professional artist before pursuing degrees in music education and performance. As an Assistant Professor of Music at Rust College, she is known for inspiring her students to embrace agency, advocacy, and social change through music and the humanities. Faulknor also shares her expertise through performances, masterclasses, and research presentations, spanning across the Caribbean, United States, and Europe.
