Arizona Democratic Representative Raúl Grijalva passes away at age 77

Longtime Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva, a Democrat from Arizona, passed away at the age of 77 due to complications from his cancer treatment. Grijalva had served in the House for over 20 years and was known for his progressive stance on environmental policies. He was the chair of the Natural Resources Committee and co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. His staff described him as committed to producing lasting change for future generations.

Grijalva’s death makes him the second House Democrat to pass away in office this month, following the sudden death of Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas. With Grijalva’s passing, the Republicans now hold a slim majority in the House with 218 seats to the Democrats’ 213.

Prior to his time in Congress, Grijalva had a long career in public service, starting as a community organizer in Tucson. He later served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors after chairing the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board. His death leaves a void in the Democratic Party and the House as a whole.

As a developing story, more updates are expected in the wake of Grijalva’s passing. Nnamdi Egwuonwu and Scott Wong, politics reporters at NBC News, are following this story closely along with contributions from Rebecca Kaplan.
