In a thrilling quarterfinal matchup in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, No. 1 Texas women’s basketball team defeated Mississippi 70-63. Led by All-America forward Madison Booker’s 19 points, the Longhorns extended their winning streak to 14 games.
Texas faced a tough challenge as they led by 15 early in the third quarter, but Ole Miss rallied back behind Kirsten Deans’ hot shooting from beyond the arc, bringing the Rebels within two points with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game. However, Texas managed to hold on and outscored Mississippi 10-5 in the final minutes to secure the victory.
Deans finished with 20 points to lead the Rebels, while Madison Scott recorded 14 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. The Rebels’ poor shooting in the third quarter ultimately proved to be their downfall.
Despite facing foul trouble, Texas managed to hold on without Booker for the final minutes of the game. With 53 fouls called in the game, three players fouled out and six others finished with four fouls.
Texas, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, will now face either Florida or No. 9 LSU in the semifinals on Saturday. As Texas moves on in the SEC Tournament, Ole Miss will await its fate in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
The exciting victory adds to the Longhorns’ impressive season and further solidifies their status as a top contender in college basketball.
