Honoring the Late Robert George Clark, Jr: Mississippi House Update for the Week of March 3

The Mississippi House convened for its ninth week of the legislative session, meeting a key deadline for committees to report bills and amendments. The House also passed House Resolution 81 honoring the late Robert George Clark Jr., the first African American elected to the state legislature in the 20th century. The resolution recognized his leadership and contributions to civil rights, education, and public service.

The House welcomed the Holmes County Central Singers, an award-winning choir, who performed the national anthem. The choir, founded in 2018, has received top ratings and performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall.

Several Senate bills were passed by the House, including adjustments to State Senate districts to comply with the Voting Rights Act, the establishment of an Entertainment Industry and Workforce Development Task Force, and new regulations for hunting including a requirement for hunters to obtain a wild turkey stamp.

The House has until March 12 to take action on bills and amendments from the Senate. Lawmakers will reconvene on Monday to continue their work. The passing of these bills and resolutions demonstrates the commitment of Mississippi lawmakers to addressing a variety of issues affecting the state. Through their legislative efforts, they aim to support conservation efforts, promote economic growth in the entertainment industry, and honor the legacy of influential figures in Mississippi history.
