Fear of Deportation to Ukraine Looms for Ukrainians in the U.S. Amid Uncertainty

Ukrainian immigrants who fled the war with Russia and now live in the U.S. with temporary legal status are terrified at the prospect of facing deportation back to an active war zone. President Trump has said he will soon decide whether to revoke their temporary legal status. More than 280,000 Ukrainian immigrants resettled in the U.S. since the war started in 2022 through a program called Uniting for Ukraine, providing them with temporary humanitarian parole. Trump’s administration has targeted legal programs for immigrants, causing uncertainty and fear among the Ukrainian community.

Some immigrants also have Temporary Protected Status, which was set to expire in April before being extended to October 2026. However, Trump has targeted this program as well, leaving immigrants unsure of what legal options could keep them safe. Trump’s decisions to halt military aid to Ukraine and make disparaging remarks about President Zelenskyy have left the Ukrainian community feeling betrayed and hurt.

The Ukrainian community throughout the U.S., including those in New York City’s Little Ukraine neighborhood, are fearful of potential deportation back to a war zone where their homes have been destroyed. The uncertainty and anxiety among Ukrainian immigrants have only increased after Trump’s recent actions. The fear of deportation back to a war-torn country where their lives and the lives of their loved ones are at risk has left many Ukrainian immigrants feeling abandoned and unsure of their future.
